Something I Don't Really Believe In
2023, Statue of the Virgin Mary
Something I Don't Really Believe In, 2023, Installation view from the solo exhibition DAD at BUoY Arts Center Tokyo
As the title implies, the artist does not hold a strong belief in the existence of God. However, viewers have frequently remarked on perceiving divine elements within her previous body of work. This title reflects the artist's own contemplation of the divine, ultimately expressing the subtle emotional distance she feels from God.
This work represents a unique attempt to appropriate a religious idol as an art object. Rather than presenting something to be subjectively "worshipped" as a deity, she transforms it into an artwork to be objectively "viewed and observed," thereby endowing it with a new function rooted in objectivity.
In the solo exhibition DAD at BUoY Arts Center Tokyo (Kitasenju), this piece was exhibited in resonance with Father's Buddhist Altar, another object-based work.
