CHANGE MY MONEY BACK

2026, neon sign, paper document

CHANGE MY MONEY BACK emerged from my experience of being threatened at a hostel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and subsequently seeking a refund. Rendered in pink LED light, the phrase departs from the conventional English expression “Give me my money back.” Its awkwardness carries the urgency of having to explain harm and assert one’s rights in an unfamiliar language.

Exhibited alongside correspondence with the hostel and a police report, the work brings a personal demand for a refund into public space. It questions what it means to be heard, and how safety and dignity might be restored when returning money alone is not enough.

Subject: Request for access under Article 25 of the Dutch Police Data Act — incident on 30 August 2026 at CoolDocks Rotterdam

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hereby request access to the police data processed about me in connection with an incident on 30 August 2026 at CoolDocks in Rotterdam.

On that day, a man approached me aggressively at the entrance to CoolDocks. He shouted at me and raised his fist very close to my face, causing me to fear that he would hit me. Following my report, the police attended the scene.

On 7 September 2026, I made enquiries at a police station. I was told that no formal criminal complaint had been registered. Subsequently, through the live chat on politie.nl, I was informed that, if the police had attended the scene, their attendance would have been recorded in the police system, and that I should submit a request to the Privacy Desk to obtain access to those records.

I therefore specifically request access to all police data relating to this incident, including, where available:

  • The initial report or police log entry;

  • The incident record;

  • The registration number, incident number, or other reference;

  • Records confirming that police officers attended the scene on 30 August 2026.

I need this information as supporting documentation for a payment dispute with my credit card company. If possible, I would therefore also appreciate written confirmation of the registration and its corresponding reference number.
